WinZip has built a reputation for itself by providing quality compression and decompression software for both Windows and Macs, and even extending it to iOS devices. But did you know that they only offered Windows. PDF editor Called PDF Pro (opens in new tab)?
WinZip PDF Pro: Pricing
- Low hardware requirements and average subscription prices.
First, your PC needs to be running Windows 7 or higher, with a CPU of at least 1.5GHZ, at least 2GB of RAM and 220MB of storage. They also state that you need a display resolution of at least 1024×768 but do people use smaller screens on Windows machines these days?
If you tick all these boxes, you’re good to go. WinZip offers a seven-day free trial: just download the app and start using it. No credit details or email addresses are required.
However if you like what you see, you can own – or should we rent – the software for $75 / £78 per year. That’s right: it’s an annual subscription service. Compared with the competition, it is almost average.
WinZip PDF Pro: Interface
- Clean and simple but with a suggestion that keeps on suggesting.
Launch the software and you’ll be rewarded with a blue and white interface that’s as simple as can be. All tools are available as icons in a large toolbar at the top, and the rest of the interface is dedicated to all future PDFs you’ll open and manipulate.
You’ll see a ‘Make WinZip PDF Pro your default app’ banner between these two sections. Sure you can click its little ‘x’ to dismiss it.
Unlike its pop-up window equivalent (yes, there is one of those), we couldn’t find a way to tell it not to show again. So, if you want to work with the software but don’t want to make it the default app for PDFs for everything, you have to reject this increasingly annoying suggestion every time you launch the software. will
WinZip PDF Pro: Tools
- Lots of tools, well organized, easy to use despite the occasional glitch
A simple interface means the tools you need are easily accessible. By default, you’re in. PDF Reader Mode While you may think you can’t manipulate PDF content there, there are a few things available to you.
For example, you can highlight sections of text, and mark them for redaction, for example – although this doesn’t equate to the best redaction tool. Foxit PDF Editor. There is a sidebar on the left (not by default) to help you see all the pages in your selected PD as clickable thumbnails.
From there, you’ll find tools to rotate individual pages, delete existing pages, insert new ones, rearrange them within the document, or extract selected pages to create a new PDF based on them.
This is where you will also find ‘comment’. From here, you can populate the PDF with all kinds of notes. We found it most useful during busy times. Online support with colleagues. It offers an easy way to tell others what to change, or to leave yourself a reminder.
There are many tools available to you, conveniently broken down by category. ‘Annotation’, for example, deals with text-based notes. This is where you will find highlighters, different colored post-it notes, text books, etc. All that enables you to pepper your document with all kinds of comments.
The ‘Shapes’ section lets you draw on the page, or add rectangles, ellipses, lines or arrows of different colors and thicknesses. Freehand tools are also available. And ‘Insert’ is where you stamp a document (using the ‘Stamps’ option), insert new images or attachments.
On the right, you’ll find a list of all your comments. Click one and WinZip PDF Pro will immediately scroll the document to the relevant section.
The ‘Edit’ section lets you manipulate the original content of your PDF, although you are warned that the changes you make may not match the original content. This is a welcome warning as many such tools are known to screw up formatting, but seem to be silent about it. WinZip PDF Pro is open about the fact that editing a PDF is not as seamless as editing a document in a proper word processor, and we appreciate such honesty.
You don’t actually edit the page directly. Instead you double-click the section and its contents appear in a pop-up window. Once you’ve made your changes, click ‘Apply’. It’s a bit confusing, but it works. The downside of such an approach is that you don’t see the potential formatting mess you’re making until you’re done.
You can resize the content boxes, move them around (we found this to be more difficult than on our computer, as the document scrolls when we drag a box , which makes it difficult to place it precisely where we wanted it to be the first time), add additional boxes, or delete existing ones. You have pretty much complete control.
WinZip PDF Pro: The Final Verdict
What we love about WinZip PDF Pro is how easy it all is – along with the rest. Tools like page numbers, E-Sign SoftwarePassword protecting the document, and filling out the form is incredibly easy to use.
A simple interface goes a long way to creating a productive working environment. This is one of the only negative aspects of the top PDF editor. Adobe Acrobat – which can make newcomers feel overwhelmed.
As far as PDF manipulation is concerned, this software does its best to make it as easy as possible. It’s not perfect, mind, and WinZip PDF Pro has some annoying bugs. However, overall, the feeling is that anything you want to do in a PDF document, you can do it here.
