USB Type-C: Why Does The EU Order One Charger Best For All Smartphones?

Under a new law proposed by the European Commission, all phone and small electronic device companies will be required to provide uniform charging by USB Type-C. The goal is to reduce waste and encourage consumers to use the old charger when buying a new device.

USB Type-C As Uniform Charging

The proposal states that all smartphones sold in EU countries should have a USB Type-C charger. But Apple has warned that such a move would hurt innovation and hurt consumers around the world, not just in Europe. According to him, their goal is to make every Apple device carbon-free by the year 2030.

Many end-ride phones are available with a micro B charging port or have now moved to modern USB Type-C standards. The iPad and MacBook have USB charging ports. And the same is true of high-end smartphone models, such as Samsung and Huawei\โ€™s latest phones.

These changes will apply to the charging port on the body of the device. The cable to which the cable will be attached can be USB or USBA. A study by the Commission in 2019 found that about half of the chargers sold in the EU in 2018 were USB micro B connectors, while 29% had USB Type-C connectors and 21% had Lightning connectors.

The proposed rules will apply to the following items:

  • Smartphone
  • Tablet
  • Camera
  • Headphones
  • Portable speakers
  • Handheld video game consoles such as PlayStation or Xbox

Other products did not include earbuds, smartwatches, and fitness trackers for technical reasons.

The proposal standardizes high-speed charging. This means that a device capable of fast charging will charge at the same speed.

Avoid Rubbish

EU scientists have been campaigning for a common standard for a decade. The commission\โ€™s research estimates that discarded and unused charging cables generate 11,000 tonnes of waste a year. The European Union sold 420 million mobile phones and easily portable electronic devices in the past year. The average user has three mobile phone chargers, of which he uses two chargers in a row.

In 2009 there were 30 different types of chargers, but now most models are content with three types of chargers. These include USB, Lightning, and USB Microbes.CCS analyst Ben Wood says using the same charger would be a success for consumers.

Although Apple has a strong argument for maintaining its Lightning connector. One billion active iPhone users have been given a USB connection in some of their products, including the iPad and Mac. Hopefully, if Apple continues to include USB Type-C in as many of its devices as possible, it will eventually become a trivial matter.

It is thought that it may take a few years before these suggestions are implemented. The legislative proposal, called the directive, will be debated in the European Parliament and national governments.MEPs and member states may ask for amendments to the proposal. These orders will only apply if the European Commission agrees to the amendment.

The European Commission hopes that this will take effect in 2022, after which member states will add it to the country\โ€™s law two years later. In addition, companies will have 24 months to change charging ports to USB Type-C.

\โ€We gave the industry a lot of time to come up with a solution,\โ€ said Margaret Westerger, the commission\โ€™s vice president. It\โ€™s time to dump her and move on. This is a significant achievement for our customers and for our digital goals of keeping the environment green. \โ€
