Interface and usage
Using Instant Checkmate wasn’t as easy as it should have been. Getting started with a search is easy – enter the information you know about your subject into the search bar on the company’s home page. Next, you’ll be prompted with a number of pop-ups asking for details about the person you’re searching for to help refine your results. These include the searcher’s gender and other known relatives.
Along the way, multiple stops indicate that graphic content may appear and prompt you to check a box. This happens multiple times during the search. Perhaps this is done to heighten the search and make you more emotionally and time invested in it so that you pay when the prices are finally revealed.
These pop-ups are followed by more pop-ups, though, warning you about the graphic details you can display in the Quick Checkmate report in a way that’s overwhelming and annoying. It might be fine if there was only one warning, but you might encounter as many as five pop-ups like this before you finally see the report.
Along the way, you’ll also need to enter your name and email address to proceed. You’ll also have to agree to receive instant checkmate emails – perhaps seen as another annoyance by some.
Once you finally get to the report, things get better. It contains mostly accurate information (errors do occur), especially regarding addresses. In addition, criminal records are given a probability score, a friendly reminder that a quick checkmate is not guaranteed to be accurate.
Instant Checkmate has an Android app but not an iOS app, which is a shame not to include other popular smartphone platforms. Users of the Google Play Store give it high marks with a rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars, praising the ease of use and data accuracy, with occasional frustrations when logging in and lack of depth of information.
Instant Checkmate offers phone and email support from 10am to 10pm Eastern Monday through Friday. If you’re having trouble signing up for the service or finding a report, you can refer to the online help center for tutorial videos and answers to common questions. Plus, it’s relatively easy to cancel your Instant Checkmate subscription at any time.
Unfortunately, there are no other support options like chat or similar services such as portal.
It’s also worth noting that Instant Checkmate makes it easy to remove yourself from its search database. Most other ‘people search’ tools hide this option, but it’s right in the footer on the Quick Checkmate website. In general, your data is removed within two days after you submit your opt-out request.
Instant Checkmate’s website is secured with Norton Symantec, and all payment data is transmitted using 256-bit encryption. Because all of the information on the site is available through public records, relatively little emphasis is placed on preserving the reports. The connection is also a secure one. SSL (opens in new tab) connection that uses “a private and secure 128-bit encrypted connection”.
Instant Checkmate is one of the most reliable dating tools available. However, it is a bit expensive compared to competitors. American Quest (opens in new tab). For example, US Search costs just $19.86 per month for unlimited reports. If you can afford it, go with Instant Checkmate as the information is more accurate than what you get with a US search.
If you need a background check in accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), consider another service. Good hire (opens in new tab) or Checker (opens in new tab). Both platforms are significantly more expensive and charge on a per-search basis, but the data can be used for hiring and rental application decisions.
Instant Checkmate is an affordable people finder that provides relatively accurate information. One of the best things about this service is that you get a larger range of data than similar search tools. Unfortunately, searching with Instant Checkmate is pretty frustrating because you have to click through more than a dozen pop-ups before you see the final report—even as a paying subscriber. For those who can overlook this uber annoying flaw, though, Instant Checkmate is relatively easy to use with otherwise perfect results.
