Intelius Background Check Service Review

Whether you’re doing a background check on a potential employee, doing a criminal record search, or simply trying to find someone’s address, Intelius is here to help.

Founded in 2003 by Seattle-based People Connect, Intelius (opens in new tab) There is a people search service that allows you to do general background checks and more. To date, it claims to have retrieved more than 20 billion records during its search process using information from public and private sources.

In addition to allowing you to access a vast database of records, Intelius is known for its intuitive web-based interface. Unfortunately, it’s not easy to find out what it charges, thanks to its confusing billing practices, which you’ll learn more about below.

Over the years, TechRadar has reviewed plenty of background check companies. Of those we have. Reviewed and ratedIntelius is one of the best despite some flaws.

Intelius wears many hats to appeal to a large group of customers. On the one hand, it makes it possible to reconnect with old friends, review property data and find out who is calling you. On the other hand, you can use the service to learn more about a potential love interest, including their possible criminal record, or to find out what others are seeing about you.

To access records through Intelius you will need to sign up for a paid account. Unfortunately, doing so is probably one of the most confusing aspects of Intellius.

Intuitively, most people who want to use an online service go to a site and look for a “signup”, “registration” or “new account” button. On the Intelius homepage, you’re instead greeted with a large section where you can start a search based on someone’s name, phone number, or address. Unfortunately, you don’t see the price anywhere on the home page.

Once you agree on some fine print, the search begins based on federal, state, and county data. During this process, you may be asked questions to narrow down the investigation along the way. Then, near the end of the search process, you are given one final opportunity to further narrow the search by adding other information such as first, middle, or last name, city, state, and age.

Intelius will finally provide a list of people who may match your criteria on the first results page. The list contains their name, age, and places where they may have lived. Then, tap the “Open Report” button for additional information.

As a final step, you’ll need to check a box that says you can use the information “to make decisions about consumer credit, employment, insurance, tenant screening, or any other purpose.” shall not make use that requires compliance with the FCRA.” It’s the 50-year-old US Fair Credit Reporting Act that was originally created to help people correct errors on their credit reports. However, in 1996, the scope of the Act was expanded to include additional reports on consumers, such as employment background checks. As a result, FCRA compliance is mandatory for any employer that uses a third party to conduct background checks.

This is where things get weird. To proceed, you must submit your full name and email. Once you do, find out more. (Yes, it takes a while, and I recommend grabbing a glass of your favorite beverage before starting.)

Plans and pricing

Only after Intelius completes its lengthy search does it enter pricing information for the service. You can sign up for the “Most Popular” plan, which provides one month of unlimited reports, or become a “Power User” and get two months for a slightly lower monthly price. These costs vary somewhat but are generally between $20 and $25 per month.

No search results are provided until you provide Intelius with your credit/debit card or PayPal information and make a purchase.

Depending on how you enter the Intelius website, you may be offered a promotion with a low initial cost, a trial period, or a combination of both. Additionally, if you close the Intelius website without making a purchase, don’t be surprised if a promotion in your email eventually asks you to reconsider. These emails often include links to the best prices offered by the Intelius service.

For example, during my test of Intelius, I received a 50% off email moments after closing the Intelius website. Another dropped the price to $1.99, which included a five-day trial before the regular monthly price kicked in.

Keep in mind that your experience may vary.

The results you get and other things

Naturally, the results you get on one will vary, depending on what Intelius finds. When found, the report can include address records, public records, photos, criminal or traffic information, public social profiles, assets, licenses, and more. If you are looking for a lot Of data about one, there is perhaps nothing better than Intelius. In particular, it offers extensive background check capabilities if you’re after it.

Additionally, I would give Intelius high marks for easy to contact customer service. A phone number and email are readily available on the site. It’s a couple cartoons missing with many of Intelius’ competitors.

As mentioned above, accessing the report takes a long time. Keeping this in mind, Intelius has introduced the FastPass feature. By selecting this option on the first page, you can go through the payment page before searching. It’s a fairly quick process and I’m very happy that Intelius offers it. And without saying it directly, going this route gives Intelius a bit more transparency because you see the price up front.

Cancellation of Service and Certain Negatives

Unfortunately, Intelius’ confusing pricing extends far beyond what was mentioned above. It also offers smaller packages, such as reverse phone lookup and address lookup. They cost less than $1, which sounds good until you read the fine print. These options come with limited time trials. automatically Upgrade to full membership after trial ends.

Yes, Intelius addresses this online before you make a purchase. However, the upgraded price is best communicated in the small print. Be sure to cancel your membership before the trial ends so you won’t be charged the full fee.

Additionally, although this did not occur during my research, some Intelius customers claimed online that Intelius still charged them after canceling service. Some others have mentioned being overcharged. None of these events should be with a reputable company; Hopefully Intelius has addressed these concerns since these comments.

Support and Customer Care

The Intelius website does not have a complete FAQ page. Instead, any issues need to be addressed directly with Intelius Support. Members of staff are on hand during business hours Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm, so your query should be dealt with quickly. Unfortunately, there are no weekend hours. You can call or email support. Other options such as chat, support portal, or forums are not available.

One downside to the Intelius search service is that you cannot use the product to conduct employment background checks. If that’s why you’re looking for a background check service in the first place, consider using one. People trail (opens in new tab) Rather unlike Intelius, People Trail is an accredited employment screening service.

Another downside to Intelius is that the service requires a monthly subscription, and it’s impossible to pay for background searches. A competing service worth considering is one that employs a straightforward pricing scheme. Sterling (opens in new tab) For those who only need one-time or occasional searches. This subscription model makes Intelius ideal for people who need multiple searches per month.

Final decision

If Intelius streamlined its pricing practices, it would probably add a few more stars to this review. As things stand, pricing is, at best, vague. Beyond that, you’ll probably be happy with the search results, which are comprehensive and multi-layered. Of course, expect a long wait for the actual report to be published after paying.
